The Story of Etain Etain, a goddess in Celtic mythology whose name means the "shining one," was legendarily beautiful. She was much loved by the Fairy God, Midhir. Midhir's first wife Faumnach was jealous of Etain and cast a spell on her for seven years, turning her into a butterfly. Even in this transformed state Midhir knew exactly who she was, and Etain continued to express her love to Midhir, often humming him to sleep at night. Infuriated, Faumnach caused a magical wind to carry Etain across the sea; she was blown for a thousand and twelve years on the Irish winds. Eventually Etain flew into a great castle where she rested on a high beam in the ceiling of a great banquet hall, ....but she fell ..and dropped into a cup of wine. The wife of Edar, an Ulster hero, drank the wine and swallowed Etain, and thus became with child. Etain was reborn as a human child. Once again she was named Etain - and she grew-up and blossomed into a beautiful woman. All this time Midhir continued to search for Etain. He found her, as beautiful as ever, and married to Eochaidh, the King of Ireland. Upon seeing Midhir, Etain began to remember the love she had for him. Through a series of challenges Midhir tricked Eochaidh, and wrapping his right arm around Etain, they magically flew up and out of the castle. All that could be seen in the sky were two white swans, joined together with a golden chain. The story of Etain speaks to all of us. We may endure many challenges in our lives that we may view as hardships, even so, these challenges can lead to changes and transformations. Deep within us is an essential essence, an inner eternal shining core. Etain is a beautiful example of how we can adapt to the challenges we face in life, changing and transforming the experience. Riding through change we can experience the transformation. An Irish Horse Goddess, Etain weaves a beautiful example of how we can continue to shine from within, no matter how challenging a situation, circumstance or condition may be.
